Contract: Short-term Freelance role between August 20th and October 31st
Hours: part-time 100 hours (recommended work time would be 16hrs pw over 6 weeks or 8hrs pw over 12 weeks) We are flexible to work with you on how this can fit with programming.
Wage: £10 per hour.

The Job

The Production Assistants are a key part of our grassroots, DIY arts festival team. We are recruiting for two posts. This is across exhibition installation to marketing and promotion for the festival. The roles are versatile and have to respond to the needs of the festival.

Where appropriate, the Assistants will manage volunteers and freelance technicians and other specialists. The role is challenging, rewarding and offers lots of opportunities to learn about producing arts exhibitions, events and publications. Assistants will be responsible for increasing the quality of the festivals digital content and output, working across the team and the varied programme of events.

 We are looking for someone exceptional, with proven practical skills and knowledge in at least one of the artforms we work with, for this key role.

Working relationships

Reporting to MAW directors team.

Other key relationships

Liaise with marketing to promote events and exhibitions and evaluate impact. Act as supporting artist liaison.


• A strong interest in public and cultural event programming and the arts
• Good administrative and organisational skills, with strong attention to detail and accuracy – or evidence of the ability to develop these
• Able to respond quickly to changing surroundings and multiple programming
• Ability to take initiative
• A passion for exhibition making and the visual arts
• Very good communication skills, customer service awareness.
• Experience of office and systems administration or evidence of ability to develop these.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for working in a team
• Good IT skills
• A flexible approach to working hours with ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
• Social Media skills and ability to create content for audiences on Instagram / Facebook and Twitter, including knowledge of Adobe.
• Availability for the full MAW festival 4-7 October 2018
• Minimum of 3 A Levels (grade C or above) or equivalent


• Experience of installing exhibition displays
• Experience of running public programming
• An awareness of the contemporary art scene in the North East
• Knowledge of Adobe & Microsoft Office
• Driving License
• Craft and trade experience – woodworking/electrical etc
