Edinburgh based artist Ben Owen celebrates collaboration and improvisation. Shaped by his background in music and work with independent music communities, Owen utilises live musical performance alongside film and installation to explore the collaborative nature and relationships between these media. As part of his practice, he’s currently part of the Arts Council funded project ‘Acts of Transfer’, working with other artists including writer Lizzie Lloyd and SECP member Katy Beinart to break down the definitions of what a socially engaged practice is and can be. Together they investigate methods to visualise these art forms so they can be better understood and document these conversations in performance, writing and film to share with audiences and exhibit in Brighton at the Socially Engaged Art Space.
Before earning his MFA in Film/Video and Photographic Arts from Bath Spa University, Bath (2012), Owen coordinated multiple performances, workshops and classes with bands including Soe’za, Line, Barton Carriages and Drinks. Selected past exhibitions and projects include ‘NOW’ and ‘NEXT’, two film and audio commissions for Lux Scotland, Creative Scotland and the BBC (2020-21), ‘Jonathan and Maggie’, duet aired on Radiophrenia (2020), ‘JUPITER RISING’, Radiophrenia, Glasgow (2019), ‘THE BAFFLING’, g39, Cardiff, Wales (2018) and ‘MUTTER PHYSICS’, Spike Island, Bristol (2018).
