Michael James McCormack

Revolving around historical events, Michael James McCormack’s paintings present an outside perspective for viewers to observe and be enveloped by. In an abstract, playful style, his paintings bring to light the presence of what they depict whether that be violence or misery. Harsh brush strokes for battle scenes and gentle taps for nature, he takes careful consideration of his work’s subject matter. As well as a painter, McCormack is a curator and founder of the St Edmund Hall Interim Show and the Sackler Library Exhibition Space, Oxford (2017-ongoing).

After obtaining a BFA from Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford in 2018, he later co-curated the permanent Peter Farmer Operatic Collection in St Edmund Hall, Oxford (2019). McCormack’s exhibitions include ‘Goosebumps’, CONNY Arts Festival, Consett, County Durham (2019), ‘Three Teasers’, Open Studio, North Shields (2019), ‘BEEP Contemporary International Painting Biennial’, Swansea University, Swansea (2018), ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’, TESTT Space, Durham (2018), ‘Drawing Studio: Works on Paper’, Mary Olive Art Gallery, Oxford (2018), ‘A Painting Show’, Silvies Café, Oxford (2018), ‘St Edmund Hall Interim Show’, Oxford (2017), ‘These are History Paintings’ and Sackler Library Exhibition Space, Oxford (2017).
