A MAW 2018 co-commission with Tyneside Cinema and Circa Projects

MAW2018 with Tyneside Cinema have collaborated to co-commission a re-iteration of Islanders (Premiered at Berwick Film and Media Festival September 2018). The bringing together of a cinema and a festival to provide opportunities to afford further examinations between artist film and multiple ways of display. It is bringing together expertise from both single screen film and more expanded ideas of artist moving image.

Islanders is a collaboration between Giles Bailey and Sophie Soobramanien, Jamie Hammill and Nellie Saunby that aims to explore their identities as island inhabitants. The work builds on strategies of co-authorship and ways to work together developed over the course of Giles Bailey & CIRCA Project’s two-year collaboration. Using moving image and live performance, it explores the construction of island identity at a point when the UK’s relationship to other landmasses and the sea around it is in flux.
By collectively expanding and re-staging diverse historical representations of islands that exist in the popular imagination, Islanders offers a collage of material to propose critical relationships to states of isolation, political fantasy and the promise of rescue.

At Middlesbrough Art Weekender 2018, Islanders will be presented as an installation consisting of video, props and 2D material. A live version of the work will be performed on the opening night.
